Abstract
Studies have shown that the most pervasive types of leisure activities among Korean older adults are passive. Little research has investigated to what extent theses patterns have changed. This study examined 7-year changes in types of leisure activities among older adults (aged 65+). We used the Korean National Leisure Condition Survey, which is a nationally representative dataset, with 680 elderly respondents in 2012 and 1,708 respondents in 2019. The participation rate in passive leisure activities did not significantly change from 2012 to 2019. However, the participation rates in social and active leisure activities visibly increased. The proportional increase was highest for cultural and art-related leisure activities, while the absolute magnitude of the increase was largest for sports activities. The proportion of older adults with only passive leisure activities decreased to 3.8% in 2019. In contrast, the proportion of those whose leisure activities included at least one active leisure activity increased to 63.8%. The proportion of those whose leisure activities mostly consisted of active leisure activities increased to 7.6%, implying a greater breadth of leisure activities among Korean older adults. The results also suggest that more effective policy interventions are needed for women, less-educated and lower-income individuals, rural residents, and the less-healthy.
